eSIM or roaming? Start with your phone.

The right mobile plan is the one that works on your actual device, in the country you're visiting, for the things you need to do.

Take a Quest editorial guide · Updated November 6, 2026

First check whether an eSIM is possible

Not every phone model or carrier setup supports third-party eSIM plans. Check your device's technical specifications and whether it is carrier-unlocked. An offer that looks inexpensive is not useful if your device cannot activate it.

What are you using mobile data for?

For maps, ride bookings, translation and messaging, a data-only plan may suffice. If you need a traditional voice number for calls or verification messages, confirm whether the plan includes voice and SMS or whether your home line will still be active. Check hotspot terms for laptops or multiple devices.

Also look at the exact countries included. A regional package is not automatically valid across every country on your itinerary, and the stated data allowance may have speed restrictions or an expiration window.

When roaming can be simpler

Your existing mobile provider may offer an international day pass or included roaming benefits. The convenience of keeping your usual number can outweigh a cheaper eSIM for a short trip, particularly if you expect important calls. Compare current carrier rates, data conditions and daily charges rather than making assumptions.

Five checks before departure

  1. Confirm your phone supports and permits the eSIM.
  2. Check all destination countries and the data coverage map.
  3. Compare actual costs for the trip duration.
  4. Save installation instructions and arrival addresses offline.
  5. Keep a fallback in case activation or service fails.
