Ask better travel questions.

Black travelers are not a monolith. We focus on reliable information, local voices and practical choices rather than blanket claims that a city is universally safe or unsafe.

Start with reliable voices

Choose museums, local archives, community organizations and independent travelers as separate types of sources. A cultural institution can explain history; a recent traveler review can surface service questions; official transit information can help plan a route. None of these sources alone can guarantee how another person will be treated.

Six questions before you go

  1. Whose history is told? Does a site work with local historians, museums or community organizations?
  2. How recent are the reviews? Has the hotel or business changed management or policies since an old review?
  3. What will transportation look like? Can you reach your lodging and the places you want to visit at the times you'll actually travel?
  4. Is the ownership claim current? Verify Black-owned businesses from business-provided or trusted up-to-date information.
  5. What's the plan if something changes? Keep emergency contacts, offline directions and a backup transport option.
  6. Are you comparing different perspectives? One person's experience is informative but not a universal verdict.

Community perspectives: Green Book Global

Green Book Global is a separate Black travel review community with destination stories and travel-planning tools. Its traveler-submitted reviews can help identify questions to research further. Community scores are subjective and should be considered alongside official site details and current local information.

Take a Quest is independent of Green Book Global. This reference is informational, not a claim of an affiliate partnership, endorsement or access to another member's private content.

Stay precise about safety

We don't classify whole cities or populations as safe or unsafe for a race or identity. Instead, we recommend researching current circumstances, accommodation policies, reliable transit, and practical logistics relevant to your trip. For any particular establishment, check up-to-date information and avoid generalizing from unverified anecdotes.
