Research before you recommend.

Supporting Black-owned businesses can be part of intentional travel. The first step is ensuring your information is accurate and current.

Take a Quest editorial guide · Updated November 6, 2026

Go beyond a recycled list

Online articles often repeat the same business recommendations without checking whether ownership, locations, opening hours or services have changed. A directory is a useful starting point, not proof that every entry is up to date. Check the company's official website, most recent announcements and current contact details.

Avoid guessing ownership

Do not infer that a business is Black-owned from the race of people in photos, its neighborhood, its menu or its marketing. Look for how the business describes itself, credible local reporting, or a directory with transparent verification practices.

Ownership and management are not the same thing. If a recommendation depends on ownership, be specific and avoid implying a permanent status based on a years-old article.

Look for community knowledge

Tourism boards, museums and local business associations can highlight events and businesses that don't appear in broad travel search results. Platforms such as Green Book Global also provide Black traveler perspectives, although a community review is not itself ownership verification.

Plan a visit that is actually practical

  1. Confirm the business still operates and the address is correct.
  2. Check current hours and whether reservations are needed.
  3. Review menu, service offerings, accessibility and payment policies.
  4. Compare distance from your other stops and transportation costs.
  5. Credit original sources when mentioning a founder's history or community role.

What Take a Quest will publish

We will avoid naming a business as Black-owned until it is reasonably verified from current sources. We will not publish unverified accusations about companies or treat one customer's experience as universal. Where details are uncertain, we will say so instead of pretending certainty.
