Build a walkable route, not an exhausting checklist
Start by choosing an accommodation location and identifying the three places you most want to visit. Savannah has many historic squares, but that does not mean every cultural attraction, meal and museum is easy to walk to. Consider the season, shade, weather, uneven sidewalks and any mobility needs.
Arrival day: Visit a square or spend time by the riverfront if it is near where you stay. Keep the first afternoon unstructured in case travel takes longer than expected.
Make space for Black history
Visit Savannah highlights museums and heritage sites that interpret African American experiences, including the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum and Pin Point Heritage Museum. Each tells a different story. Check whether a guided visit, self-paced exhibit or scheduled opening best fits your plans.
If you visit a location focused on enslavement, segregation or civil rights, avoid treating it as one more attraction on an overfilled day. The exhibits deserve time and attention. The local museum's interpretation is a better starting point than recycled social-media captions.
An unhurried second day
Spend the morning at a chosen museum or guided heritage activity. Pick a nearby meal afterward, then revisit a historic neighborhood or waterfront area. Keep paid tickets flexible when the weather forecast is uncertain. If traveling with a group, separate individual activity budgets from shared lodging costs.
What your budget needs to include
Historic-district accommodation can simplify walking but may include parking expenses. Cheaper lodging farther away may mean repeated rideshare fares or time searching for parking. Check overnight parking policies, admission costs, accessibility and your departure arrangements before deciding.
